I am not a cancer survivor, nor have I ever been diagnosed with having the disease. Nonetheless, in two short years, cancer has managed to turn my world upside down.  In that time, I have lost three of the most important people in my life to cancer. Unfortunately however, I know that I am not alone and that my story is not unique. Cancer affects us all. I decided that cancer has taken so much from so many, that now it’s time to take back!  The goals of Rainbow of Hope Inc. are to raise cancer awareness among Canadians, build a support network for patients and their families and help raise funds for research and other cancer related programs and/or services. Rainbow of Hope Inc. was created out of the pain, hurt, sorrow, grief, anguish and frustration I felt over the loss of my loved ones and from the drive and determination to help change the outcome for others. Unfortunately I can not change history, and I can not get all my loved ones back, but hopefully through the work of Rainbow of Hope Inc. and with your help, we can help change the future! For every life that is saved, extended or for every diagnosis that has a happy ending, we will have succeeded in taking back from cancer, what it has taken from so many,…life!

The month of March brings awareness to Colorectal Cancer as well as Kidney Cancer. Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in Canada. Overall, it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among Canadians. The Canadian Task Force on Preventative Health Care recommends that if you are over the age of 50, you should have an FOBT (Fecal Occult Blood Test) every one to two years. Studies show that regular FOBT testing may lower the mortality rate of CRC by 15% to 33%. Colon Cancer is one of the more preventable types of cancer. If screened and caught early, the chances of survival increase by 90%. There are other risk factors for colorectal cancer including heredity, diet, weight etc. Regular physical activity and eating a healthy diet including lots of fruits and vegetables may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. If you are over the age of 50 and have not been screened for CRC, or if you are under the age of 50 but feel you may be at high risk, do not wait, call your physician today!

Kidney Cancer is more common in men than women and is often found in those over the age of 50. Some of the factors that increase the risk of developing this type of cancer include smoking, being overweight and high blood pressure. Having any or all of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have or will develop kidney cancer and some people may develop this cancer without any of these symptoms. if you feel you are at increased risk, it is always best to speak to your health care provider. During the month of March, help recognize, honour or memorialize all those affected by Colorectal Cancer and Kidney Cancer by wearing your dark blue or kelly green cancer awareness merchandise.
